When you're ready to install a blind rivet, start by placing the nozzle of your rivet gun flat against the surface. Then, squeeze the trigger to pull the metal pin or mandrel through the body of the rivet, compressing the two pieces of material together between the head and the mushroomed body.

To select a rivet for your project, determine the type of materials you plan to join and what their thicknesses will be. You'll also need to consider how the rivet will be applied.
Most home projects use a 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch rivet, but larger ones are available. Make sure the rivet you purchase matches the size of your drill holes so that they can fit properly. If you're working with steel, stainless steel, or aluminum materials, be sure to buy the same metal for your rivets to prevent corrosion.
